At the age of three at a live performance of the Nutcracker, I told my mother I dreamed of becoming a ballerina. Just after my fourth birthday, I began ballet lessons. Studying ballet gave me many talents and skills but most valuably it instilled in me a great talent at observation. The ability to observe tiny details to precisely adjust my body positions to perfectly execute each ballet move. As I got older, I think this early passion for detailed observation and precision ignited my passion for science, and in the end I pursued a degree in Biochemistry instead of a career in ballet.
Biochemistry combined my love of the precision required for successful analytical chemistry and DNA extractions with general scientific principles around observations and problem solving. At the University of Alberta my engagement in student life and student politics also exposed me to relationship building, advocacy and persuasion, and the power of collaboration to achieve greatness (Go Green and Gold). At the U of A, not only did I walk away with a Science degree but I walked away with a desire to make a difference in business.
Then there was a meandering and diverse journey of 15 years of projects. First, projects addressing the grave public health consequences of dietary salt and hypertension, then introductory and continuing education for first responders, a virtual human and a computerized mouse model for obesity, a national and international journey to aid rare neuromuscular disease patients in getting better care and the latest treatments, and then the fascinating world of software development - web communities, great user experiences, marketplaces, drop shipping, and the combining of my passions in technology and health - software for doctors.
Through all these projects I became fascinated by the larger problems and solutions needed by the organizations carrying them out. As it turns out, organizations and chemistry have a lot in common. I pursued my Project Management Professional (PMP) and Professional Scrum Master (PSM-I) designations to expand my toolkit and I gathered my observations of how organizations and projects interact for success or failure into the Value Delivery Competence Model.
Through Analyte Projects Ltd I am able to bring my analytical mind, powerful observations, passion for precise solutions to complex problems, and dedication to making continuous tiny adjustments that maximize execution, to organizations who want to be better. In this brave new world we are entering post-pandemic, I think all organizations will need to care about the value they deliver and refine their practices to ruthlessly deliver it.
If this is a journey you want, or need, to go on, I hope you'll connect!
